Square Footage Calculator
To find square footage, multiply length by width for a rectangle, or use pi times the radius squared for a circle. This is the starting point for every material estimate: once you know the area, you can work out mulch, gravel, paint, sod, and more.
Enter your measurements above to see the area.
Rectangles, circles, and odd shapes
For a rectangle, area equals length times width, both in feet. For a circle, area equals 3.1416 times the radius squared (the radius is half the diameter).
For an L-shape or any irregular area, split it into rectangles, calculate each, and add them together.
From square feet to materials
Square footage alone tells you area, not volume. For loose materials like mulch or gravel you also need a depth; for paint or seed you need a coverage rate.
Once you have the area, jump to the right material calculator and it will do the rest.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate square footage?
Multiply length by width in feet for a rectangle. For a circle, multiply 3.1416 by the radius squared. Split irregular shapes into rectangles and add them up.
How many square feet is a 10x10 room?
100 square feet, because 10 feet times 10 feet equals 100.
