Gravel Calculator

To find how much gravel you need, multiply the area by the depth and divide by 27 for cubic yards, then multiply by about 1.4 to estimate tons. One cubic yard of gravel weighs roughly 2,800 lb (about 1.4 tons), varying with stone type and size.

2 in for ground cover and paths, 3-4 in per layer for a driveway base.

Depth by project

For decorative ground cover and walking paths, 2 inches is usually enough. For a driveway, build it in layers: a coarse crushed-stone base of 3 to 4 inches, then a finer top layer.

Measure length and width in feet, set your depth, and the calculator returns cubic yards, an estimated weight in tons, and a bag count.

Bulk vs bagged gravel

Gravel is almost always cheaper in bulk by the cubic yard or ton, and bagged gravel is heavy to move one 50 lb bag at a time. Bags make sense only for small repairs or when you cannot take a delivery.

Because suppliers often sell by the ton, the tons estimate here helps you order. Treat it as a range, since stone weight varies with size and moisture.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a yard of gravel weigh?

Roughly 2,400 to 2,900 pounds (about 1.25 to 1.7 tons), depending on the stone type and size. A common planning figure is 1.4 tons per cubic yard.

How many tons of gravel do I need?

Find your cubic yards (area x depth / 27), then multiply by about 1.4 to estimate tons. Round up and order a little extra for settling.

How deep should gravel be for a driveway?

Plan for a total of 4 to 6 inches, ideally in two layers: a coarse crushed-stone base topped with a finer driving surface.
