Fill Dirt Calculator

To find how much fill dirt you need, multiply the area by the average fill depth and divide by 27 for cubic yards, then multiply by about 1.25 to estimate tons. Fill dirt is almost always bought in bulk by the cubic yard or ton.

Measure the average depth you need to fill or raise; for holes, estimate the average depth.

Fill dirt vs topsoil

Fill dirt is subsoil used to raise grade, fill holes, and build up low areas - it has little organic matter, so it compacts well and is cheaper than topsoil. Use fill dirt for the bulk, then cap it with topsoil where you want to plant.

For an uneven hole, estimate the average depth across the area rather than the deepest point.

Ordering in bulk

Fill dirt is heavy and sold by the cubic yard or ton, delivered. Allow for compaction: filled material settles, so order a little extra and tamp in layers.

Check your access for a delivery truck, and confirm whether the supplier quotes by the yard or the ton.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a yard of fill dirt weigh?

Roughly 2,000 to 3,000 pounds (about 1 to 1.5 tons), depending on moisture and how much clay or rock it contains.

What is the difference between fill dirt and topsoil?

Fill dirt is subsoil with little organic matter, used to raise grade and fill holes because it compacts well. Topsoil is the rich upper layer used for planting. Fill the bulk with fill dirt and cap with topsoil.

How much fill dirt do I need to raise my yard?

Multiply the area by the average depth you want to raise it (in feet) for cubic feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards. Add extra for compaction.
